How to: sew on buttons
What you need in your repair kit: Button, matching sewing thread (40cm), spacer (pin, toothpick, or match), sewing needle, scissors.
- Thread the needle and make a knot by tying both ends of the thread together.
- Create an anchor point in the shape of an X on the back of the fabric using small stitches.
- Place the button over the X and make stitches through the buttonholes, using a spacer to maintain the right amount of tension. Repeat the stitching process 4-5 times, ensuring the button is securely attached.
- On the last stitch, come up behind the button and make small knots on the back of the fabric and cut off any excess thread.
How to: re-attach a neck label
What you need in your repair kit: Neck label, matching sewing thread (20cm), spacer (pin, toothpick, or match), sewing needle, scissors.
- Place the label in its correct position and attach it with a pin to keep it steady.
- Sew an anchor point shaped as an X on the back of the fabric. Attach the label by sewing a few stitches through the fabric and the label.
- On the last stitch, make a knot close to the garment and cut off the thread. Make a few small knots on the back of the fabric.
How to: fix small holes
What you need in your repair kit: Fusing paper, scissors, an iron, a cotton cloth.
- Cut out two small pieces of fusing paper slightly larger than the hole. Iron on top of the hole to make the fibres stay in place.
- Place the fusing paper on the back side of the hole, with the adhesive side against the fabric. Press the iron on the hole for 10 seconds, using a cotton cloth as a protective layer. Use your fingertips to press the edges of the hole together.
